The Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, generally known as the Red Army, was the army and air force of the Russian Soviet Republic and, from 1922, of the Soviet Union, established in January 1918 by decree of the Council of People's Commissars. It provided the largest ground force in the Allied victory in the European theatre of the Second World War. In February 1946 the Red Army, the main component of the Soviet Armed Forces alongside the Soviet Navy, was renamed the Soviet Army.
