The Battle of Berlin (16 April - 2 May 1945) was the final major offensive of the European theatre of the Second World War, fought between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union for control of the German capital. Marshal Georgy Zhukov commanded the 1st Belorussian Front, deployed along the Oder river, in the assault on the city. Adolf Hitler killed himself on 30 April; the city's garrison surrendered on 2 May, though fighting continued nearby until the war in Europe ended on 8 May.
