The Battle of Borodino was fought on 7 September 1812 near the village of Borodino outside Moscow, between Napoleon's Grande Armee and the Imperial Russian Army under General Mikhail Kutuzov, during Napoleon's invasion of Russia. Approximately a quarter of a million soldiers took part, making it the bloodiest single day of the Napoleonic Wars, and the battle ended with Napoleon holding the field while the Russian army retreated south but remained intact.
