The Battle of Chaldiran was fought on 23 August 1514 and ended in a decisive victory for the Ottoman Empire over the Safavid Empire. The Ottomans annexed Eastern Anatolia and Upper Mesopotamia from Safavid Iran, marking the first Ottoman expansion into Eastern Anatolia and halting further Safavid expansion westward; the battle opened 41 years of intermittent war between the two empires that did not end until the 1555 Peace of Amasya.
