The Battle of Manzikert was fought between the Byzantine Empire and the Seljuk Empire on 26 August 1071 near Manzikert. The decisive Seljuk victory and the capture of the Byzantine emperor Romanos IV Diogenes undermined Byzantine authority in Anatolia and Armenia and opened the way for the gradual Turkification of Anatolia in the following decades.
