The Battle of Okinawa, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was an 82-day Pacific War battle fought from 1 April to 22 June 1945 between United States Army and Marine Corps forces and the Imperial Japanese Army on Okinawa Island. Described as the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific theater of World War II, the fighting produced roughly 50,000 Allied and 100,000 Japanese casualties and ended in an Allied victory.
