The Battles of Saratoga were fought on 19 September and 7 October 1777 near Saratoga, New York, between the American Continental Army under Generals Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold and the British Army under General John Burgoyne, during the American Revolutionary War. The second battle ended with a decisive American victory and Burgoyne's surrender, persuading France to enter the war as an American ally.
