The First Battle of Panipat was fought on 21 April 1526 between the invading forces of Babur and Ibrahim Khan Lodi, the Sultan of Delhi, in North India. Babur's smaller army, employing gunpowder firearms and cannon in one of the earliest such engagements on the Indian subcontinent, defeated Ibrahim Lodi, who was killed in the fighting along with an estimated 20,000 of his soldiers, and the victory marked the beginning of Mughal rule in India.
