The Second Battle of El Alamein was fought from 23 October to 4 November 1942 near El Alamein, Egypt, in which the British Eighth Army under Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery defeated the Axis Panzerarmee Afrika under Erwin Rommel, forcing an Axis retreat from Egypt and Libya toward Tunisia. The battle marked the beginning of the end of the Western Desert Campaign and ended in an Allied victory.
