Operation Nickel Grass was a United States strategic airlift from 14 October to 14 November 1973 that delivered weapons, ammunition and aircraft to Israel during the Yom Kippur War. U.S. Air Force C-141 Starlifters and C-5 Galaxies, staging through Lajes Field in the Azores, flew approximately 22,325 tons of supplies, including tanks, artillery and fighter aircraft, replacing Israeli materiel losses at a critical point in the war.
