The Norman Conquest of England was an 11th century invasion beginning in 1066 by an army of Norman, French, Flemish and Breton troops under William, Duke of Normandy, later known as William the Conqueror. William's forces defeated King Harold Godwinson's English army at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066, killing Harold, and William was crowned King of England, though English resistance to Norman rule continued in parts of the country for several years afterward.
