The Wars of Scottish Independence were two extended military conflicts fought from 1296 to 1357 in which the Kingdom of England, under Edward I, Edward II and Edward III, attempted to establish control over the Kingdom of Scotland, whose cause was led over the course of the wars by William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, David II and other Scottish nobles and guardians, aided by France under the Auld Alliance. The First War ended with the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton in 1328, which recognized the independence of Scotland and Robert the Bruce as king, and the Second War concluded with the Treaty of Berwick in 1357, leaving Scotland independent.
