World War I, or the First World War (28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918), also known as the Great War, was a global conflict between two coalitions: the Allies, also called the Entente, and the Central Powers. Fighting drew in the main Allied Powers of France, the United Kingdom and its empire, Russia until 1917, Italy from 1915, the United States from 1917 and Japan, against the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and, from 1915, Bulgaria. The war ended in an Allied Powers victory with the Armistice of 11 November 1918.
