The Tiger I was a German heavy tank that began operational service in 1942, first in action near Leningrad before also fighting in North Africa, and for most of the war its thick frontal armor and powerful 8.8 cm gun made it one of the most feared tanks Allied crews faced, though it was expensive to build and mechanically unreliable.
