The Continental Army was the standing force raised by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, to coordinate the colonies' fight against Britain. Commanded by George Washington, it was a centralized, hierarchically organized force with standardized enlistment terms, distinct from the local militias that supplemented it, and its victory at Yorktown in 1781 secured American independence.
