The Kentucky, or Pennsylvania, long rifle was developed on the American frontier in the early 1700s by German immigrant gunsmiths adapting the European Jaeger hunting rifle to a long, small-caliber barrel. Its rifled accuracy, far superior to the smoothbore musket at range, made it prized by American riflemen through the Revolutionary War.
